Offshore Canning / Roebuck Basins Seafloor Geochemical Survey and Basin Study

PetroConsult Pty Ltd and Surface Geochemical Services AS would like to determine the level of industry interest in a multi-client program that targets the questions of hydrocarbon generation, migration and seepage in the offshore Canning and Roebuck Basins. The proposed survey area covers the 1999 'likely' gazettal release areas and the recently closed W98-10 to 24 areas (see figure). We are therefore seeking support from companies evaluating the gazettal areas and those future operators (to be announced) of the soon to be awarded tenements.

A major exploration risk in the offshore Canning / Roebuck Basins relates to hydrocarbon charge and migration. Surface geochemistry can provide valuable information as to whether hydrocarbons have been generated in the region, and if so, where and what kind of hydrocarbons (i.e. typing, biomarker analysis, oil versus gas).

Surface geochemistry is being used increasingly worldwide and is particularly applicable in poorly explored areas such as the offshore Canning / Roebuck Basins. The method offers a very efficient, cost-effective method for highlighting areas of exploration interest and assessing exploration hydrocarbon charge risk. The presence of seeps drastically reduces the risk of drilling a dry well. Although the absence of surface seeps does not necessarily preclude the presence of hydrocarbons, the risk of drilling a dry well increases considerably. The proposed program would involve: · Examination of available seismic and remote sensing (e.g. ALF) data to select offshore sampling sites. · Collection of seafloor samples by Surface Geochemical Surveys AS. · Analysis of samples for evidence of thermal hydrocarbons. · Interpretation and mapping of charge migration fronts. · Integration of analytical results with the geological and structural framework deduced from seismic data. · Use of the results to calibrate 2-D basin modelling.

Project Costs
